A preserved natural forest in the Yamakado area, located in the northernmost part of Nagahama City, was historically utilized for charcoal and firewood production. Designated as Shiga’s largest wetland since 1996, it sits surrounded by the mountainous forests of the region, showcasing a unique and extensive ecosystem. Ideal for hiking and nature observation, this area houses diverse rare flora and fauna, including the historic Yamakado Wetlands. It’s home to various treasured species. Visitors can relish cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, and vibrant autumn foliage, making it a year-round attraction.
