Nagahama Breweries
A Rich Local Tradition of Fermentation
Since Japan’s medieval period, this area has flourished thanks to the natural bounty of Japan’s largest lake, Lake Biwa, a climate characterized by heavy snowfall, and an ideal location for effective distribution at the intersection of several major historic trails.
The region has nurtured a distinctive culture of fermentation and brewing since ancient times. Home to some of Japan’s most venerable sake and soy sauce breweries, the area has also fostered pioneers of Japanese craft beer, and fermented goods that make for excellent souvenirs and gifts. Visitors of Nagahama are treated by these delights which are not just delicious, but also reflect the area’s rich cultural heritage.
