Discover samurai history & local culture by Lake Biwa

Join a local guide for a half-day walk through Nagahama Castle Town, built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi—one of Japan’s great unifiers. Before rising to power, Hideyoshi created a castle and a lively town where samurai ideals and merchant culture came together, shaping a legacy that still thrives today.

This special tour will be offered on November 8 and 9, each as a half-day guided walk exploring the heart of Nagahama’s historical charm.

This 3-kilometer walking tour begins at the Nagahama Castle Historical Museum, where you’ll trace Hideyoshi’s rise from humble origins to power. Continue to Hōkokujinja Shrine, often called the Samurai Shrine, dedicated to Hideyoshi himself.

Stroll through the atmospheric streets of Kurokabe Square, once home to townspeople who supported and surrounded Hideyoshi. During the walk, take in the charm of its preserved buildings and lively atmosphere—a place where history still lingers. After the tour, you may wish to return to explore its glass workshops, local shops, and cafés at your own pace.

Finally, visit the Nagahama Hikiyama Museum, which showcases one of Japan’s most elegant float festivals—a symbol of the community’s artistry and prosperity. The tour concludes in the Kurokabe area, where you’re free to explore, dine, or enjoy a peaceful stroll to Lake Biwa.
