Ko-rai-gen

Ko-rai-gen

OVERVIEW

The Nagahama area boasts the highest concentration of Buddhist temples in Japan, with Buddhist culture deeply embedded in the lives of its residents for centuries. Ko-Rai-Gen offers unique lodging as part of a temple with over 600 years of history. At our facility, you can immerse yourself in the traditional temple routines that have been passed down through generations in this region. The facility, annexed to the temple building and the priest’s residence, is situated in a serene rural village and is exclusively available for one group per day. The annex includes its own private entrance, shower room, and toilet, ensuring your privacy and comfort.

Your stay includes unique temple experiences such as ringing the morning bell, preparing and offering rice to the Buddha, chanting sutras with the head priest, and crafting onigiri for breakfast. We cater to English and Spanish-speaking guests, with the head priest’s wife being a licensed local guide. English translations of the sutras are also available. Additionally, guests have the exclusive opportunity to view the hidden Buddha statues in the inner sanctum, where the head priest will provide insightful explanations of the Buddha’s teachings.

We also offer an OMAKASE (guide’s choice) tour, where you will be taken to the region’s most enchanting spots in an EV tuk-tuk, with guided commentary available in both English and Spanish.
